Introduction

I’m pretty sure that many of you don’t quite realise how many power supplies Thermaltake makes – there are the standard Toughpower units, along with the new QFan Toughpower supplies, one of which we have on the test bench today. In addition, there are the Purepower, TR2 (and the new “RX” versions of those), and then there’s also the Litepower series and others. Basically, Thermaltake caters for the entire top to bottom range of customers, and while this is sometimes understood as an unspecific and broad approach, meaning that no particular range is ever given as much attention as it deserves. But, I’m not quite sure it’s as true in recent years.

Yes, Thermaltake is probably the champion of high power e-peen and at times it's somewhere akin to all those “herbal remedies” you get emails for, however the company also innovates in the mainstream area – its QFan (or Quiet Fan) advancement for its Toughpower range is a unique, open sided 14cm fan that is specifically designed to be whisper quiet by reducing the wind shear noise between the blades and the casing edges.

While in the past there has been quite considerable backlash over early Thermaltake power supplies, the company has worked hard to readdress this preconception. But, as is always the case, there still those that are unconvinced and with such a tough market—especially in the mainstream—has Thermaltake finally made a PSU to change this?

The Toughpower QFan 650W comes in a surprisingly large box, given the PSU itself is a normal size at just 16cm x 15cm x 8.6cm. It’s extremely well packed between two large bits of foam and is also bubble wrapped for good measure. The additional modular cables come neatly packed in a separate pouch used to store them and the power cord even comes in a separate box (which is actually a little wasteful in our opinion). Thermaltake even includes a rubber mount to put between the PSU and the case in order to further dampen vibration.

The manual is also very comprehensive detailing its features, connectors, 12V rails distribution and even output regulation, ripple and noise. Even if the wording is a little Chinese-English (it adds to the humour, honest) it’s still perfectly understandable. All in all, the entire package is excellent – it’s well thought and provides precisely what’s needed.

Thermaltake also packs a five year warranty in with this PSU – a good period of cover that will certainly be ample for just about everyone.
